Echo was a Greek nymph who was fatally in love with the handsome youth Narcissus. He didn’t return her love and in her sorrow she spent the rest of her days crying in lonely forest glens until all that was left of her was her voice.
Ironically Narcissus later met his end when he fell in love with his own reflection in a still pool of water. In some versions he wastes away until all that is left is a flower, the first Narcissi. In other versions he either drowns when he tries to embrace his own reflection or kills himself when he realizes his mistake.
As you can see I have only covered parts of the canvas and left others unpainted. To me, this was a simple way of showing Echo’s fate. Only a faint outline of her form is left and the most prominent feature are the jagged red abstract forms which represent her voice and the pain that she feels.
